Wood firing is the oldest method of firing pottery, dating back more than 20,000 years to the earliest ceramic traditions. Before electricity and gas, wood was the primary fuel used to transform clay into durable ceramic vessels. Over centuries, potters across China, Korea, Japan, Europe, and many other regions refined wood-fired kiln designs, discovering that ash carried through the kiln could melt onto the surface of the pottery to create natural glazes and distinctive textures.

Featuring exclusively wood-fired pottery, this exhibition showcases vessels shaped by the unpredictable interaction of ash, flame, and atmosphere. No two pieces are exactly alike: the versatile nature of wood kilns decorates each piece in a unique way.
